Day 46: SnoozeFest 2K18

That's right everyone, we're back with more songs from Taylor Swift's 2007 Christmas album! This time I'm talking about one of the two original songs on the album, Christmases When You Were Mine. If you don't remember me saying, I'm trying to do these loosely in ascending quality and this is the second one I've talked about so far. I think that should pretty clearly show how I feel about this song.

This song is trying to be sad, and it just really doesn't work. Taylor tells us absolutely nothing about the relationship so we have nothing to be invested in. All we know is that boy is far away and that is sad. She does tell us a little about his family, which is actually gives a little insight in to the nature of their relationship, but because it isn't about either of the people in the relationship it just isn't quite enough.

But the lack of details isn't the biggest problem, not by a long shot. The issue with this song is that it's just poorly constructed. The music in the background is the complete opposite of what people are used to when they think Christmas. I so think that slow Christmas music can work; there are some really popular slow Christmas songs. But you know what no one wants to do at Christmas? No one wants to be sad! So stop trying to bum me out Taylor, and give this decent track the song it deserves.

I don't usually speculate on specific ways to improve songs because I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. That said, I think this song would be a thousand times better if it was a slow, calm, happy song about being warm and by the fire by Christmas. Is that super cliche? Yes, but this is a freaking Christmas album! People don't want to sit alone crying in their rooms, they want to buy their family dumb warm clothes and spend time with loved ones.

Had I not heard this song, I probably would've thought it was a decent concept. But it doesn't work at all, and all it does is make me wish I could listen to Michael BublĂ©.

See you tomorrow,
C
