So to start let's distinguish between a cameo and a full on appearance, or role. Cameos are essentially glorified extras, where typically extra visual emphasis is placed on the character to make it clear that they are more important than the background characters, but less important than any of the actual cast. To be a member of the cast, the character must have a story line that they follow, have clear character traits, and serve a purpose narratively. The thing about Taylor's acting career is that on the surface it's difficult to evaluate, since her roles hardly go past being cameos. Below I've listed all of Taylor's appearances, as well as whether she plays a character or just has a cameo. Btw I'm not including commercials or music videos so don't ask.
Character Roles:
The Giver
CSI: Crime Scene Investigations
The Lorax
Valentine's Day
Cameo:
New Girl
Hannah Montana: The Movie
Misc:
Saturday Night Live (host)
Cats [movie] (scheduled for December 2019 release)
First I'll get the cameos out of the way. Her appearance in New Girl is funny but hardly more than an amusing footnote. Her presence is basically a punchline, although I do like to imagine that it's somehow the inspiration for her song Speak Now despite releasing three years later. It did let me get this gem of a gif though, so that's nice.
Do you recognize him? I sure did. Here's another shot in case you forgot.
Yeah, that's the same guy that was in the You Belong With Me music video! What a slut! I have no clue if this was a coincidence and I have no clue which came first; I'm just going to assume that You Belong With Me is what happened after the movie ended and this dude starting dating Miley.
I also wish I could talk more about her appearance on SNL, but I just don't have the time for it, I'm sorry! If you don't like it then feel free to start your own Taylor Swift blog, I dare you. I will say that it's the best Taylor has appeared on screen in my opinion. I didn't expect her to do well at sketch comedy but it's a surprisingly good fit.
HAY IS FOR HORSES AND CHICKENS AND FISH
This gif makes me nauseous
Enjoy those, we're moving on. Taylor had a notable role in The Giver, but also not really. Her character, Rosemary, is very important to the plot but she has like three lines and is barely in the movie. I actually already made a post about this movie, so if you want to hear more about what I had to say immediately after watching it to look there. The tl;dr is that Taylor was hardly in it but the scenes she was in were not bad at all. Taylor didn't exactly shine, but there was not reason to suspect she was at fault over the movie itself.
Taylor Swift's role in The Lorax was pretty similar. She plays an important character with only a few scenes, but does pretty well in every scene she's in. I would even go as far as to say that she's pretty dang good in the role of Audrey. Casting Taylor as the Ditzy girl next door makes a lot of sense, especially if you live in the strange world of 2012. When this movie hit theaters her most recent album was Speak Now. Also it has Danny Devito, which I'm still not over.
science has gone too far
That's all of her roles that I'll be discussing today, tomorrow I'll be tackling Valentine's Day and CSI. Before I go I want to say that I'm very excited for the Cats movie adaptation to release; I am interested to see if Taylor will thrive in a musical setting. It makes sense that she would do well but there's really just no telling at this point. It's scheduled to release in December of this year which is a very long time from now.
I guess I should also mention the movies she wrote songs for, otherwise the nerds will complain. Other than Hannah Montana which had Crazier, Taylor wrote Eyes Open and Safe And Sound for the Hunger Games movies, and Sweeter Than Fiction for One Chance. There, I mentioned them. Happy? I sure am.
See you tomorrow,
-C
