Day 13: I Almost Do

For those of you who didn't read yesterday's post, I assigned some homework. And yes, there is a test so I hope you studied! All you need to do is listen to this song and deduce what it's about.

There's a lot of misinformation out there about this song, so let's just take it slow and move one step at a time.

"Abed, this time of night you're still up.
Abed, you're tired from a long hard week.
Abed, you're sitting in your chair by the window looking out at the city.
And Abed, sometimes you wonder about me."

At this point it should be abundantly clear. This song takes place in the time of Taylor Swift's life right after her messy breakup with Abed Nadir, the fictional character from the hit show Community. Abed, who is played by the wonderful Danny Pudi, is a fan favorite among the Community cast, some going as far as calling his performance "pretty good".

The man himself

"And I just wanna tell you
It takes everything in me not to call you.
And I wish I could run to you.
And I hope you know that every time I don't
I almost do,
I almost do"

This song is so great because of how unapologetically bold Taylor is in her rendition of this relationship. It was by a large margin the best job she has ever done of keeping a relationship a secret, with no leaks to the media during the relationship and still none after it's over. All that's left to suggest it's existence is this song which, quite obviously, says Abed's name many times. It's really quite surprising just how little Taylor is trying to hide it, especially after all those months of secrecy.

"Abed, this time of night you're still up.
Abed, you're tired from a long hard week.
Abed, you're sitting in your chair by the window looking out at the city.
And I hope sometimes you wonder about me."

It's so surprising to me that people don't bring this up more. I don't even watch Community and I still understood who Taylor was talking about right away. It might have something to do with this being a lesser known song, but that can't completely brush aside the absolute dearth of coverage this relationship has gotten.

It's a shame too, because this song makes it sound so beautiful. If I weren't so bad at video editing I would make a sappy music video with Abed's face shopped into every frame. Only then would the people finally know the pain that they both have had to go through after the break they suffered. It's clear from the song that Taylor still has feelings for him, and I can't imagine that it's completely one-sided.

Overall, great song. Very sad, very emotional, very intimate.

See you tomorrow,
-C
